Jersey Ice Cream Co was founded in the summer of 2010. Two kids in love found an old embossing stamp at a flea market, dreamed up a design empire, and then set to work trying to create it. Today Tara Mangini and Percy Bright spend their time moving house to house, job to job, leaving beautiful homes in their wake. They believe in craftsmanship, timelessness, and leaving things better than they found them. They do not make ice cream, but will happily have some if you’re offering.

A MERRY LITTLE EVERYTHING

December 26, 2013 by Tara Mangini 2 Comments

IMG_0985 copy
The day after Christmas has always been a little heart breaking to me. As a child, the thought of waiting 364 days until Santa returns was unbearable, but even as an adult, I can’t help but feel that something magical has vanished and suddenly all that’s left in its place is the thought that winter, the real bleakness of it, has only just begun. Sigh.

It’s so tempting to just curl up into bed with no honest plans to leave until Spring, but this year (like everything) I find myself wondering what I can do to make the cold days a little more bearable. But with a trip to Hawaii not in the works, and new snow boots waiting by the door to make their debut, I know that the only place the warmth is going to come from is a fire, the heat turned to full blast, or my own little shivering heart. Life in those precious weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas seems to be fueled by a frenzy of glitter and goodwill. People love to mumble about trimming trees and baking cookies and wrapping gifts for other people, but I have to believe that it’s part of the Christmas cheer equation. Hide behind your Grinch face if you must, but I know that tasting the first homemade cookie made you smile, especially if it was mom’s recipe, or maybe something new you came up with yourself. And there’s a reason that the tree looks a little more special when you go chop it down yourself, or when it’s hung with ornaments that each have a little story to tell. The more love you put in, the more love you get out. And that simple equation is the only thing that’s going to keep us warm for the next few months.

So hold your loved ones close. Treat yourself to a cup of hot chocolate and put extra marshmallows in for the 3 year old you once were. Stay up past midnight to watch the snow start falling, and spend an entire Saturday in your pajamas writing letters to your favorite people. Be in awe of yourself and the things that your two little hands can make. Take the time to create little moments of beauty, and most importantly, share them with everyone you can. Because with the days so dark and cold, we need all the light we can get.

And now, from me to you, some Christmas moments of beauty. And my most successful (and easiest!) shortbread recipe of the season.

Big Indian REVEAL Revealed

October 11, 2013 by Tara Mangini 5 Comments

overview_08-blog
Last week we had the honor of sharing our Big Indian project with the world. In case you missed the beautifully done feature on Remodelista, be sure to take a look. We owe a huge thanks to Justine Hand for putting so much care into entire piece, and for taking the time to so eloquently explain the insane amount of work that went into the project.

It’s always so exciting to have these big projects revealed. We spend so many months working in isolation, doubting ourselves, sweating, sanding, etc, that it’s so thrilling-and slightly nerve wracking!- to throw the cover off and say, here it is! This article in particular was a total stunner, and I found myself bragging to complete strangers about the feature, something I swear I never usually do. So really, be sure to take a peek at it.

Luckily for all of you die hard fans out there, I am a compulsive picture taker, which means that even though Remodelista filled their post with tons of pictures, there are still tons more to share! So now, for your viewing pleasure, a personal peek into our Big Indian project, with some never-before-seen final shots. Enjoy!

HOLY SHIPLAP and Other Pieces of Cake

July 3, 2013 by Tara Mangini 6 Comments

IMG_9357
I can’t believe it was just a few weeks ago I was working in this gorgeous home, surrounded by some of the nicest things I’ve ever seen, including a personal favorite, central air. As I write this now I am continually being swarmed by ants and mosquitos, surrounded by tools in a house with no running water, no toilet, no tub, no sink, and nowhere to sit except the very chair I am sitting on. So you can see why it seems like a distant dream. A dream that I am very happy to sink into.

We knew this was going to be a great job when we walked in and were greeted with lemon squares, crumb cake and freshly pressed coffee. Future clients, take note. Kristian (names have not been changed to protect the fabulous) has spectacular taste, so his house already looked amazing, but we needed to bring in some warmth and texture to soften up the new construction-ness of it. The whole place is open and clean and filled with light, so we knew it was going to look great, but we didn’t know it was going to look THIS great.

We used wood from Lowe’s, and washed it with Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White. (0kay, okay, we just color matched a sample of the color. Sue me.) A few days of cutting and nailing and sanding and caulking and touching up and voila! Best darn looking living room north of Spring Garden.

It just goes to show that shiplap, like baked goods, makes everything a little bit better.

There’s NO PLACE like HOME

April 22, 2013 by Tara Mangini 5 Comments

househomeFor about a year now we’ve been living like nomads. Traveling from one job (or trip!) to the next, living out of bags, subletting, crashing with friends, and living with my parents in suburbia to fill in all the time in between. There was some excitement to this lifestyle when it began last spring, but at this point we’re both desperately longing for a place to call home.

We had hopes of trying out a new city, which led to a nationwide search for the perfect place to live. There are still a few places to investigate, but as fairy tales have been trying to tell us for years, it turns out in the end, home was right in front of us. Staying in Philadelphia near our work and connections and people feels like the best thing to do for now, especially while we continue to try and figure out this crazy business of ours. The runner up awards went to LA, New Orleans and Savannah, and the five year plan still involves moving somewhere warm and beautiful and building a house and having a vineyard and maybe even some blonde kids running around, so don’t get TOO used to us being in one spot. Yes, I’m already thinking about our next house and we haven’t even found our first one yet. But I know you’re crazy and do the same exact thing, so cheers to being human!

Anyway, house hunting! What a glorious, fun, all-consuming, disappointing, heart-breaking, dream-making activity. We pretty quickly have realized that the more completely falling down a place is, the more we love it. Remodeled kitchens? Shiny new wood floors? Freshly tiled bathrooms? No thanks! Bring on the cracking plaster, the hidden wide plank flooring, the tattered wallpaper that I can’t get out of my brain, and make the place super affordable while you’re at it?

Here is a glimpse of the things that have been making our hearts flutter, and some glitter popcorn walls just for the fun of it. And if you believe in magic, send out a little prayer to the housing gods that the guy selling 728 S. 6th comes to his senses and let’s us turn a crumbling mess into a beautiful home. If it happens, our guest room is wide open.

For the LOVE of WOOD

April 12, 2013 by Tara Mangini 1 Comment

Hunting for barn wood is always a bit of a challenge. We’ve gotten a few good hauls through the years, and have lusted after many dilapidated barns on the side of the road, but have never actually had the chance to see the wood in place before it ends up in the back of our truck. Until now!

We took a hike up to Phillipsburg, NJ last week and took a peek at the falling down barn and its 100+ year old wood planks before they tore them off for us to use at the new Bryn & Dane’s location in Horsham, PA. The siding we got was awesome, but I wish we could have taken the whole place with us. The floor boards were gorgeous, and the entire lower level was white (and dirt) washed in the most beautiful way.

Take a peek at the barn, and stay tuned to see where the salvaged wood ended up.

We Made It BEAUTIFUL While You SIPPED A MARGARITA

March 26, 2013 by Tara Mangini Leave a Comment

Sometimes a perfect design opportunity arises and you just have to jump on it. A dear friend of ours was looking for some help sprucing up her Ikea-filled apartment on a budget and was also about to fly out to a warm beach somewhere for a little family getaway. Though we only had a few days to prepare, it was a now or never situation so we made it happen! While she was sipping mojitos, we were able to completely take over her apartment and in just a few days turned the space into the warm and cheerful home she was dreaming of. Though it’s never easy to come home after a vacation, we were so happy to make her return a little brighter.

A TURKEY was HERE.

December 7, 2012 by Tara Mangini 3 Comments

edit-IMG_7645
How shall we start this off. Perhaps, forgive me I’m a huge blogging failure?

I meant to post pictures of how we left the house before Thanksgiving. Each room waiting anxiously to be seen. A new table preparing to hold its first turkey. Fresh paint drying all over and beds made and couches and everything! But instead I ate a lot of food and watched lots of movies and stayed far away from my computer. The moment for the grand tour seems to have passed, or at least been postponed until things are finished! Which is in a few weeks, which just gave me a heart attack. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have something beautiful to share with you. To be honest, there is SO much I want to show you. But we’ll get there, we’ll get there.

For now…the dining room! Or at least the front half. From start to (near) finish.

oldining-01
This is how the dining room looked when we walked in the door for the first time. We instantly knew we wanted to change every single thing about it. Green trim. Lace curtains. Hand stenciling. Those things could look beautiful if done right, but they sure didn’t look beautiful here.

oldining-03 oldining-02
One of the first things we decided was that this little dividing wall had to come down. It created two tiny unusable rooms instead of one grand dining room. Which is exactly what our food and company loving clients needed.

So with one swift blow of his mighty hammer…

IMG_2425 IMG_2419
…Percy knocked the wall down. At least that’s how he tells it.

With the wall down, we realized that under about 5 layers of cheap wood flooring, the original wide plank floors were still in tact. We couldn’t just leave them buried under there! Many many days of demo and sanding and sanding and staining and finishing followed.

edit-IMG_7475
We knew we wanted to plaster in the dining room, and loved the idea of having a blue sky like ceiling and slightly darker walls. I read somewhere that people used to paint their ceilings because it was cheaper than painting the entire room, and for some reason loved that thought. Even though we didn’t paint, and covered the walls as well, it still makes me feel like there’s a story hidden in there.

edit-IMG_7544 edit-IMG_7567
It’s no easy task, but plaster going up is a beautiful sight to see. The bottom half of the room was so rich in color we almost wanted it to stay that dark. But once the dry white clouds started forming we fell in love with the new color too.

Plus, some wood from an old barn door came together to make a perfect long dining room table.

edit-photo-9
This is what the dining room looked like around 7am the day before Thanksgiving.

edit-IMG_7575 edit-IMG_7572
And this is what it looked like when we walked out the door a few hours later. (We thought we’d give the green trim one final meal.)

edit-IMG_7588 edit-IMG_7617
A little lot of turkey and rest did us good, and we were so excited to get back up to the house after a much needed Thanksgiving weekend.

It was magical walking back into the house. The plaster had dried to the perfect colors. The sun was shining. The kitchen was incredible. Everything was simply dazzling to the eyes. Such a dramatic change from that first day, months ago, when we curiously opened the front door.

A little paint mixing and a few tedious trim painting hours later, voila. The oh-so-stunning dining room was officially born. There are still some final touches to be done, but we’re totally in love already. And hope you are too.

What DAY Is It?

November 7, 2012 by Tara Mangini Leave a Comment

Tuesday, right?

Wow. That was an actual guess and I just checked and it’s literally Wednesday. I will never be able to prove this to you all, but take my word for it.

We are currently in the stage of this job that I like to call “The Total Worst”. That is to say, the total worst part of a situation that overall is amazing, so still not the world’s worst, but you know, the awful middle part of something that’s pretty great. Did I mention I’m high on floor stain fumes?

The coming together stage feels incredibly close, but as of today we are basically camping indoors, which I’ve been trying to think of a word for. If glamping is glamorous camping then we are… Riving? (Rough living.) Hamping? (Home camping.) Seriously, it’s the fumes.

I had big hopes to keep this blog orderly and compartmentalized but today I throw caution to the wind. Which according to the weather forecast will also be filled with snow any minute now.

Instead, enjoy this scattered glimpse into our lives (and the house) today. Everything you see is exactly how it really is.

Paint Swatches & Things Hidden Under Carpets

October 22, 2012 by Tara Mangini 3 Comments

Things I hate:
Dingy wall-to-wall carpeting.

Things I love:
Paint swatches. (even though they drive me insane)
Finding out that original wide-plank flooring is hiding under said dingy carpeting.

(Above, the floors before a little sanding and varathane.)

And voila! After! (Note the shoe color change. Sanding perk.)
