Jersey Ice Cream Co was founded in the summer of 2010. Two kids in love found an old embossing stamp at a flea market, dreamed up a design empire, and then set to work trying to create it. Today Tara Mangini and Percy Bright spend their time moving house to house, job to job, leaving beautiful homes in their wake. They believe in craftsmanship, timelessness, and leaving things better than they found them. They do not make ice cream, but will happily have some if you’re offering.

CHRISTMAS IN YELLOWSTONE

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all had a lovely holiday season filled with family, friends, fires, and plenty of food. The four Fs? Totally unintentional.

My mom and I were lucky enough to spend Christmas week in Yellowstone. It was the best. We rode all over the park in old 70s Bombardiers that would make Wes Anderson jealous. We went of a night tour of Fountain Paint Pots under the stars. We saw five wolves, a coyote, two otters playing together in an ice cold river (there was literally ice floating past them), and more elk and bison than we could count.

If you ever have the chance, get to Yellowstone in winter! It blows summer Yellowstone away, and that’s no small feat.

GO WEST

Well, it’s been almost eight months since our last blog update. Oops! So what have we been up to? In January, we found ourselves down in Tennessee redoing a kitchen for the lovely Beth Kirby (aka Local Milk). Then we headed back north to redo a big farmhouse in the Catskills. Photos of both projects on the way!

But more importantly, summer vacation! My mom and I had a chance to road-trip around Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico. Wow. What an absolutely breathtaking part of the country. It’s impossible not to take thousands of photos, but I did manage to edit them down some. Hope you enjoy as much as we enjoyed our time out there!

A couple of bison grazing in the early morning Yellowstone fog. We woke up super early one morning hoping to see some wolves, but instead saw a grizzly playing in a tiny little snow patch by himself (through someone’s scope from about a mile away!) and also saw a ton of bison. Not “buffalo,” apparently–that was just an early nickname since they looked a bit like true buffalo from other parts of the world (water buffalo, etc). Who knew!

The stunning view from the top of the stairs at Jackson Lake Lodge. The story goes that–back in the National Park system’s infancy, when the Tetons remained rather untouched and mostly in private hands, and the town of Jackson was in a sad state–John D. Rockefeller Jr. had a picnic lunch one day before this very same view. He was so blown away that he decided to buy up as much of the private land as he could (for later donation) and to build a hotel in just the right spot so that every visitor would be treated to the very same view upon arrival.

More from the Tetons, Bluff UT, the gorgeous Mabel Dodge Luhan House, and more after the jump!

All our EGGS in one SPANISH MOSS FILLED BASKET

SAVANNAH_9047
I’ve been a ridiculous dreamer/idea maker/unrealistic planner my entire life. I thought that when I escaped the world of waiting tables and started to “figure out my life” the big crazy plans would subside, but in fact they’ve only grown bigger, and actually feel more possible than ever. So when Percy and I started dreaming about our potential new lives in Savannah, I completely 100% fell in love with the idea, and fast. It was like somebody said the word Savannah and we said “YES” in unison.

We instantly booked a trip and started planning our perfect lives down there. A great old house with a yard and a garage, suntans all year round, spanish moss, cobblestone streets, a vintage shop, a design firm, an ice cream shop (to finally make some sense of our name) a bed and breakfast that would rival Ace hotel, complete with a speakeasy style underground bar AND a roof top pool, (because frankly, why not?) and of course, an amazing group of creative (but not too artsy)  friends who would invite us over to big dinners under twinkle lights. Savannah! The place where dreams come true and you can wear a dress every single day, which is exactly what I would do, after I went for my morning run and made a fresh smoothie and efficiently responded to emails. I’m telling you I was so excited my stomach ached. This was IT.

I wish I could tell you that we were packing up our things to head down there for good, but it seems that our big dreams may have gotten slightly ahead of us. At least, for now. Instead the dreaming continues, the plan everyday slightly different from what it was the day before. I’m just holding onto those Georgia butterflies that had me so excited and waiting impatiently for Spring.
