Jersey Ice Cream Co was founded in the summer of 2010. Two kids in love found an old embossing stamp at a flea market, dreamed up a design empire, and then set to work trying to create it. Today Tara Mangini and Percy Bright spend their time moving house to house, job to job, leaving beautiful homes in their wake. They believe in craftsmanship, timelessness, and leaving things better than they found them. They do not make ice cream, but will happily have some if you’re offering.

MAGIC EGG: THE BIG REVEAL

October 15, 2014 by Percy Bright 17 Comments

_House
By the time you guys are reading this, Tara will be almost halfway into her month-long yoga training down in Costa Rica and I’ll be freshly arrived in Mexico, armed with a new GoPro, somewhere on Orizaba or Iztaccihuatl, two massive snow-capped volcanos that are taller than anything I’ve climbed before. And I can’t wait. It’s been a whirlwind past few weeks of nonstop work as we finished up the little guest house to the Magic Egg, had Country Living come shoot the main house (!!!), and got our eight months’ worth of stuff out of there and into storage at our next job, on the North Fork of Long Island.

To say it was difficult to leave this last job would be a huge understatement. We poured every ounce of energy and imagination we had into it from February through September of this year, and couldn’t have been prouder of the finished product.

We were thrilled to have it posted on Design*Sponge in two installments: first as a Before & After and then as a full Sneak Peek. You’ll definitely want to check out those before pics! Then come back here to peruse the unabridged photo tour below.

And stay tuned for the guest house! We’ve already posted a couple sneak peeks on our Instagram, but the full photo tour is a couple months off.

Huge thanks to Rachael and Gideon, the best clients we could have asked for.

Magicians! I know the ceilings are low but it doesn’t look like they are.

Once again, so inspired!! I dove into a kitchen remodel this summer after seeing your budget makeover on Remodelista. I now have something to go on for our master bath, wish me luck!

    Hi – LOVE your work.
If you don’t mind me asking, what type of camera do you use? The photos are so alive and beautiful.

    Thank you,
    Izabella

Thanks, Izabella! The photos of this job were shot by Beth Kirby (localmilkblog.com). I believe she uses the Canon 5D Mark III, but I could be wrong!

    Hello!

Beautiful photos of a beautiful house. Does anyone where the wallpaper with flower, birds and crickets comes from?

    All the best, Jenny

Could you please, please source the bedding in the girl’s bedroom? I’ve tried searching the web, but I can’t find any of it! I want to recreate this look for my daughter! Thanks! Susan

Hi Susan! Sorry for the slow reply–comments seem to be disappearing from our posts and only showing up in wordpress dashboard for me for some reason. Anyway, the sheets were from Target and the duvet from Restoration Hardware. I totally forget if the wallpaper was gray of cream, I’m sorry. Hope that helps!

Hi guys! You do such incredible work, and I know you stay busy! I’m sure I’m not the only one who would love some insight into your sources for things like linens and hardware, etc. Have you done a post about this that I missed?

    Hey Karen,

As you can probably tell, we’re awful at updating our website and blogging about our own work! We really should keep a better record of our projects and sources on our website, shouldn’t we? Hopefully one of these days!

For now, let’s see…. The best list of our sources are probably scattered around on Remodelista and Design Sponge posts on our work. We feel constant pressure and desire to use new things every job, but we do have some old reliable sources. As boring as it sounds, we probably spend the most time and money at Home Depot, followed by Target and Home Goods. Just for timeless basics. We much prefer to purchase from local or at least US-made sources when possible, of course, but we often find ourselves in a pinch.

For actual linen linens we really like Restoration Hardware and House of Baltic Linen. For hardware, we always do a quick search on eBay in hopes of finding something like the deadstock drawer pulls we found for this job. Local salvage places always have great stuff, especially in the Northeast US. Anthropologie always has some interesting options, but always buy a couple extra since they well made but not consistently well made; you’ll definitely end up with a dud or two! For lights, Schoolhouse Electric is a go-to.

But honestly, we find ourselves looking anywhere and everywhere just about every job in hopes of finding something new. I can’t exaggerate how many hours we spend hunting down new sources and checking old ones. The best tip I can give you is keep at it! The most important thing is putting in a ton of time, discouraging as it may be some of the time.

    Hope that helps!

Hi — thank you so much for sharing so many of your sources. It’s so fun to see the pieces isolated, and a great design lesson! I’m wondering about the square brass light fixture in the blue room. I didn’t see it on Schoolhouse Electric. Where did that come from? Thank you!

Hey Amy! The fixture itself was already there, we just popped on new glass from Schoolhouse. Sorry I can’t point you more in the right direction!

Just discovered you via Insta and all I can is….WOW. On all your projects!

Love love LOVE these gray rubbed walls you’re doing in various places – is it wallpaper, paint, or…? Is it plaster? If so, what color? Looks just amazing!
